ICHEC to unveil new supercomputer for Irish research

Focus on EuropeIreland is set to install a new national supercomputer to support research and innovation in 2018 through ICHEC at the National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway, with funding of 5.4 million euro from Science Foundation Ireland. The new system will provide Irish researchers with the high performance computing power to address some of the toughest challenges in science and society such as tackling climate change, improving health care and innovating Irish products through agriculture, engineering and manufacturing. 2017-06-26 HPC in Asia - China's effort on HPC in the next 5 years - from prototypes to exascale system

China firmly ranks first and second at the TOP500 of fastest supercomputers in the world for some time already. But where is China heading? Depei Qian, Beihang University/Sun Yat-sen University gave an overview of China's effort in HPC in the next 5 years at the HPC in Asia workshop at ISC-HPC ISC'17 in Frankfurt. He started his presentation with a historical overview of HPC in China.

Another small step for EuroHPC: positive advise from the European Economic and Social Committee

Focus on EuropeThe European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has given a positieve advise about the EuroHPC JU plans. EESC is and advisory group in the European Union that represents a large number of organisations, including employers, trade unionists and representatives of sociatal, occupational, economic and cultural organisations. The EESC endorses the initiative for a EuroHPC Joint Undertaking as a concrete step in line with the European cloud strategy as well as part of a wider EU strategy. EESC sees the initiative brings clear EU added value with a key technology which will help to tackle the most challenging issues of our modern society and will ultimately be beneficial for well-being, competitiveness and jobs. European Commission proposes to invest 475 million euro in EuroHPC in the coming 2 years

Focus on EuropeThe European Commission has proposed to allocate 193,8 million euro in 2019 and 222,5 million euro in 2020 to the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (JU). EuroHPC JU should acquire and operate (pre-exascale) supercomputers for European scientists and also develop European HPC technology. In the budget proposal for 2019 funding has been allocated to the EuroHPC JU: a contribution from the EU budget, of 193,8 million euro in 2019 and of 281,1 million euro in 2020, financed from the Horizon 2020 (154,7 million euro in 2019 and 222,5 million euro in 2020) and CEF programmes (39,1 million euro in 2019 and 58,6 million euro in 2020).
