2017-10-16 Frankfurt On the ISC'17 Exhibition Floor on June 21, 2017Primeur Magazinehad the opportunity to talk with Rolf Brink, CEO at Asperitas. Asperitas has developed a concept called immersed computing. This concept starts with the development of the actual immersion system that is immersed in a dielectric liquid. The liquid that is used is oil. Rolf Brink had a unit at the Asperitas booth with a live immersion system that was actually running on the load. The system is filled with IT equipment that runs a lot more efficient in the liquid as compared to air environments because there is no ventilation energy required to cool the system down. The cooling is done by a water circuit that is at the front side of the unit. Read further...

Intel delivers 17-qubit superconducting chip with advanced packaging to QuTech

Quantum computingIntel has delivered a 17-qubit superconducting test chip for quantum computing to QuTech. The new chip was fabricated by Intel and features a unique design to achieve improved yield and performance. The delivery of this chip demonstrates the fast progress Intel and QuTech are making in researching and developing a working quantum computing system. It also underscores the importance of material science and semiconductor manufacturing in realizing the promise of quantum computing. Read further...

International team reconstructs nanoscale virus features from correlations of scattered X-rays

ApplicationsAs part of an international research team, Jeff Donatelli, Peter Zwart and Kanupriya Pande of the Center for Advanced Mathematics for Energy Research Applications (CAMERA) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory contributed key algorithms which helped achieve a goal first proposed more than 40 years ago - using angular correlations of X-ray snapshots from non-crystalline molecules to determine the 3D structure of important biological objects. This technique has the potential to allow scientists to shed light on biological structure and dynamics that were previously impossible to observe with traditional X-ray methods. Read further...

Swiss Secretary of State Mauro Dell'Ambrogio signs EuroHPC declaration on behalf of Switzerland

Focus on EuropeToday in Bern, Swiss State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation Mauro Dell'Ambrogio signed the EuroHPC declaration. Switzerland is the 11th country signing the EuroHPC declaration. This country is of particular importance to the EuroHPC consortium because it houses the nr. 3 supercomputer in the world, the Piz Daint at CSCS. Switzerland also has strong HPC application and development efforts ongoing and has research in new technologies including quantum computing. Switzerland is participating in Europe's Horizon 2020 programme. Read further...

HPC in Europe is problematic, says 85% of respondents of the targeted public consultation

Focus on EuropePreliminary findings of the targeted stakeholder consultation on the HPC initiative in Europe and the EuroHPC inception impact assessment that ran from 3 August to 5 September 2017 show that almost any respondent (85%) sees the current state of HPC in Europe as problematic. There is limited interaction between industry and academia. They note there is a deep fragmentation of HPC programmes and uncoordinated activities, and Europe's supercomputing capabilities depend on non-EU suppliers. Read further...
